113th U.I.L. state CX debate tournament 03/31/2023

Shelbyville High School students, Maddie Lout, Travis Caporali, Ava Silva, and Aubree Camp will be competing in the 113th U.I.L. state CX debate tournament held at the University of Texas in Austin in March. In district 23AA, freshmen, Maddie and Travis placed 2nd, and seniors, Ava and Aubree placed first with Ava being awarded top speaker. “UIL debate competition motivates students and provides them with practical application for the skills they are developing,” said Jana Riggins, UIL State Debate Director. “This year’s debate topic prompted students to research and form their own thoughts and opinions on the real-world issue our government is challenged with: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity.

State U.I.L. cross-examination debate

Shelbyville seniors Ava Silva and Aubree Camp placed second in the State U.I.L. cross-examination debate tournament held March 13-14 in Austin, TX. In cross-examination debate, students must be able to effectively affirm and negate a topic resolution. For 2022-2023, the topic is Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its security cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity. Ava and Aubree competed in eight rounds totaling twelve hours of debate over the two-day tournament. Both girls also received individual awards. Gavel awards are the most prestigious individual award for cross-examination debaters. Aubree Camp was presented the bronze gavel for being the third-highest speaker on the first day of the tournament and Ava Silva was awarded the golden gavel for earning the highest speaking points in the state.
"The primary mission of Shelbyville ISD is to provide quality educational experiences to all students in a safe and orderly environment which will make possible their social, economic, and educational development. All students will become lifelong learners and responsible citizens of our democracy."
